Book Club - Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

Monday 4 June 2012

Warning - this review may contain spoilers! If you haven't read the book and intend to, please don't keep reading.

This month's book club selection was Salmon Fishing in the Yemen by Paul Torday and although I really liked it, I hated the ending. It left me unsatisfied, feeling like nothing was tied up. I don't mind an unhappy ending (oh, Rhett!) but I don't like a book to have a nothing ending. And this had nothing. It also had some of the most unlikeable characters I have ever come across. I just wanted to leap in there and punch them in the nose!

Worth a read but be warned.

Cheers

  1. Hi There, new to your blog. I havent read the book but have seen the movie. I loved it. I was wondering what characters were particularly offputing - the lady media person and perhaps the main characters boss. Sorry, sketchy on details. I laughed myself silly at the antics and speech patterns of the main male character (Ewan McGregor) - he was so Aspie. I have a son and husband the same. God help me!!! LOL. Life is a rollercoster.

    1. Hi, haven't seen the movie yet (but have seen the trailer and it looks charming!) so there may be some different characters in the book compared to the movie. The characters I didn't like were Alfred's wife Mary, and the PM's communication director Peter. Both very unlikeable, but perhaps not so much in the movie, if they even made it!

  2. I'm wanting to see the movie (it's still on at our local) and if it's good, then I won't pick up the book based on your thoughts about it!!

    1. Please don't get me wrong, I really did like the book... except for the ending. I can't wait for our book club meeting on Monday to see what everyone else thought of it, and the movie is on at our local this weekend so some of us are going to see it then, I hope I'm one of them! Cheers.
